Visceral fat is the fat stored deep in the abdomen, around the internal organs — as opposed to subcutaneous fat, which sits just under the skin. It's more metabolically active and is linked to higher risks of conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

In women, fat tends to shift toward the abdomen — increasing visceral fat — as estrogen falls around menopause, which is part of why menopause weight gain often shows up around the middle. Strength training, activity, and a balanced diet help most.
